YellowDog Platform Questions

How do I use YellowDog?

See our User Videos, or see our written user guide.

If you use Linux or need more assistance, contact the YellowDog team.

Do you provide free trials?

Yes. Each customer receives 5 hours free on YellowDog’s CPU or GPU machines as part of The Full-Service Installation.

If you require YellowDog Select Service, would like a larger trial as a proof of concept for a large production, or are unable to access the free trial, contact the Render Team.

How long should it take to export my scene?

Exporting your scene to YellowDog should be a quick experience but this is not always possible. There could be a number of reasons for it taking longer than a few minutes.

For example, export time can increase if you have a lot of assets. Using YellowDog File Sync will speed up the archiving and export process.

Studios also use the Central Asset Repository (CAR) to securely store production assets and eliminate shot and asset upload time when rendering is required.

Why isn’t my job starting?

  1. Check that you have credit added to your account.
  2. It can take a few minutes to launch and assign your render nodes and then start the right software. If you’re waiting longer than 5-10 minutes to see job status change to ‘rendering’, please contact The Render team at with the name of your job.
  3. Ensure that you have entered your personal details including your VAT number and marked yourself as a business if you are using YellowDog outside of the UK.

For information on VAT numbers, see this Wikipedia article.

How will I know how long each job will take?

YellowDog provides a free of charge testing service to enable you to make accurate estimates or to obtain fixed rate multi-cloud rendering.

Once your job has started, you can see the completion percentage by looking at the progress circle in the platform. For animations, this is calculated by measuring completed frames vs incomplete frames. There are more detailed render analytics included in The YellowDog Platform.

Can you automatically predict how long my render will take?

How do I change my account settings?

Update your account details like name, email address, phone number or address, anytime by following these steps:

  1. Navigate to your account at login
  2. Click the cog icon on the side menu on the right of the screen near your name. If you cannot see your name, click the button with three horizontal lines at the top of the screen to open the side menu.
  3. After you’ve added the updated details, click save.

Can I change between CPU and GPU?

On The YellowDog Platform, you can easily choose to either render on GPU or CPU. Currently, YellowDog does not support simultaneous CPU and GPU subscriptions. If you wish to swap from one to the other, please contact us. The YellowDog team would be happy to switch your configuration for you.

Can I reduce the quantity of render nodes I have available?

Click the ‘Add Servers’ button and place a ‘ – ‘ symbol followed by the number of servers you would like to reduce from your subscription. Reducing the quantity of servers will automatically increase the number of hours that you have available. Please contact us here if you require help from The YellowDog Team.

Can I see a preview of the renders as they’re being developed?

Yes, you can see the thumbnails of the frames next to the job as they appear in The YellowDog Platform.

You will also see completed frames download as they complete to your local folder directory via YellowDog Sync if you are using Windows.

What is the specification of CPU or GPU machines?

As standard, CPU machines are 36 core, 72 thread, with a Cinebench Score of 4018. GPU machines contain dual NVIDIA Tesla P100 technology with 192 GB RAM.# Other machines types are available on request.

How do I delete my files from YellowDog?

Files can be securely stored on YellowDog for as long as customers require. To delete files from The YellowDog Platform, click the rubbish bin/trash can icon next to your project and that will delete all the files associated with that project.

How much does YellowDog cost?

For YellowDog Full Service, customers pay £4.50 per hour per machine for access to CPU or GPU inclusive of all licensing. How much your job costs will depend on the size of the job. Contact our team for more information on pricing including access to volume discounts.

Why is there a limit to how many servers I can buy in platform?

There is no limit. However, YellowDog does restrict customers to 50 servers at one time through The YellowDog Platform. To access more than 50 machines at once, contact the team to get the best price.

Why is there a minimum charge?

The first purchase you make with YellowDog is subject to a minimum charge. This credit will remain on your account and can be used whenever you need it.

When extending the subscription, the smallest amount you can purchase is one hour’s render time. We measure rendering accuracy to the second, so you can be assured that you will only get charged for the render time that you use.

Can I pay more part way through a render to increase the speed?

Yes. This will result in an increase in the speed of your rendering, but not necessarily increase the overall cost of the job which is good news for many of our customers.

If you’d like to add more servers to your account or would like to find out about volume discounts, get in touch with the team.

How will I know how much the render will cost?

The best way to determine the total cost of your render is to work alongside the YellowDog specialist render team to test and estimate the overall cost of your job to the deadline that you require. Contact the team to find out how.

What is my Cinebench score?

Download the programme for free and calculate it yourself very quickly. Visit the Maxon website and find out your score.

Where is my invoice?

Depending on your preferences, you should receive invoices for purchases made via email.

You will, therefore, be able to download your invoices from two places:

  1. From the email, you receive when you buy your servers.
  2. From the YellowDog web interface: go to the Subscriptions tab, find the relevant subscription, and click on the ‘£’ icon.

If you require more detailed information on billing or cannot find invoices, contact the render team.

How do I change my details and the details on my invoice?

Change your Account Preferences. Login to the YellowDog Platform, click on the cog in the top right corner and change your details there. This will also change the details on your invoice.

What happens if my job completes but I have unused server time?

You only ever get charged what computing power you use. Any unused time will remain on your YellowDog account until you render again with YellowDog.

What happens if I run out of the server time I have purchased?

You will be emailed 30 minutes before your server time runs out, and then five minutes before the end. You can extend your current subscription for however long you need. Depending on your agreement with YellowDog, you may be able to ensure this never happens by working closely with our sales team. Contact the YellowDog team today.

Can I have a refund for unused time?

That server time is yours and will remain yours. There’s no way to exchange your unused server time for a refund.

Do you offer discounts?

Yes! To access volume discounts or customer loyalty pricing, contact our team today.
