Here at YellowDog, we know that starting up your own business can look rather exciting. However, we also know the chaos and drama that come with it, so to help you decide our founder Gareth Williams has put together eight reasons why you should avoid the terrors that await start-ups…

  1. You’re not a problem solver.

That’s fine – some of us are more problem creators than problem solvers. If the thought of sorting out something that was dogging you for weeks doesn’t give you that thrill of the chase and the satisfaction of success, then running your own business is not for you because trust me: there’s plenty of challenges.

  1. You don’t want the buzz of your first sale.

You can work for the art of it, or you can work for a pay cheque, or you can work chasing every opportunity, driving home your service or product, and closing on a commitment to bring your own company revenue. It’s up to you.

  1. You’re not interested in the thrill of raising £150k in just 14 days.

Investors. Big or small, anyone starting your own business will end up engaging with them at some point and when the crunch comes, the pressure really starts to mount. Why not avoid all that aggravation of gaining hundreds of thousands of pounds, and not start your own business at all?

  1. You don’t want to spend time with people who are changing the world.

After all, who wants dramatic and innovative dinner conversation? Stick to the boring conversations about the weather, and you’ll be quite safe from those radicals who seek to change the world and make it a completely new place.

  1. You don’t want to hang out at a Royal Palace.

This, of course, is a danger no matter whether you run your own business or not, but let’s be honest: it’s a lot more likely to be a problem if you stand out from the crowd on a national level.

  1. You like sleep.

Sleep. I remember sleep! It’s something that I used to enjoy, before emails would ping through from contacts in other time zones, meeting notes were amended in the early hours with ideas had in the shower, and after work dinners didn’t cut into my precious evenings. If you like sleep, you may not like the entrepreneur lifestyle.

  1. You like every day to be like the next.

Change. Who likes change? It’s routine that you crave, knowing exactly where you’re going to be in a month’s time, and never wavering on your habits – simply not possible when you’ve got a business to run.

  1. Because it’s scary.

At the end of the day, business is uncertain. It offers no guarantees, no safety nets, and sometimes no great thanks. But when you make it work for you, there really is nothing like it. Endless opportunities, unplannable days, innovative minds, and the power to change the world: who would want that?
